Here we will detail some of the largest self storage companies in the US and what cool and innovative things they are doing!
The country where the self storage industry has its origins, where the surface area of self storage facilities in the country is enough for the entire of its population to stand under its roof. America is certainly “great” at self storage, and it is a feature of the majority of households in the country – it has certainly made its mark.
Following the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States earlier this week, we have come to think of some of the truly “great” things to come out of America in recent times, and one of these is certainly the self storage industry.
In this blog post we are going to focus on profiling some of the greatest self storage companies in the US, what they are doing and how they are doing it and how we can follow in their foot steps to establish the self storage industry in this country to the same extent as they have done across the pond.
Manhattan Mini Storage is a self storage company notable for its unique marketing campaigns and public advertisements. They are responsible for creative billboards across Manhattan, bringing a sense of humour to the area. They have 17 facilities in Manhattan, making it the largest personal storage company in New York, and one of the largest in the United States – they have an impressive 250,000 clients!
The themes behind their advertisements aim to identify what is important to New Yorkers – with some of the taglines used including “Time to get those Hillary for President posters out of storage” and “Don’t trust the Cloud”. They are witty and current and certainly eye catching. These extremely clever ad campaigns deserve a look, you can find them here. They also have a very clever social media platform and are well worth a follow. They have had particular laughs with the US presidential election – definitely worth checking out their Instagram if you’re looking for something to lighten the mood!
Another service provided by the company is their Storage Taxi. Clients are welcome to use this van anytime, free of charge, to get to or from their storage location as often as needed – even for the initial move-in, as long as all the stuff fits in the van in a single trip – there’s even free wifi on board!
They also accept package deliveries from FedEx, DHL and other couriers for all their clients for free. Certainly an added convenience for busy New Yorkers who would find it hard to coordinate package deliveries to their homes – and they can even book the Storage Taxi to collect their package for free! It’s easy to see how this company is such a favourite in the city, it certainly keeps its customers in mind when developing new services.
SmartStop Self Storage is the largest independent self storage operator in the US – located in Canada – with a staggering 13 million square foot of unit space. That’s the equivalent of 300 acres! They have a staggering 106,000 units for rent across eight locations in Ontario, Canada.
They hold regular online self storage auctions – members can log on during an auction to bid meaning they don’t even have to make the trip to the facility to get involved in the action! iBid4storage.com is a whole online world dedicated to self storage unit auctions taking place across the US – something that Americans have always been a fan of. We can’t really see it taking off here.. But now American don’t even have to leave the couch to take part in these auctions – The Great America!
And finally just to mention on account of the sheer colossal size of this self storage company – Public Storage was ranked number one on ISS (Inside Self Storage) Top Operators list last year with an insane 161 million square foot of storage across 40 locations!
So it is clear that America is certainly leading the way when it comes to self storage. How Great you are America!
